MASTER OF FOOD TECHNOLOGY (MoFT)

The food industry in dynamic and fast-growing for the simple fact that food is the source of mankinds sustenance. As our lives become exposed to growth and advancements and our lifestyles change accordingly, our demands for food change as well. Over the years, there has been a high consumer demand for new and different food products and this only goes to prove that the field of food technology is one that is constantly evolving, and that food technologists and scientist will always be in demand. The need, therefore, to equip oneself with the latest technologies in the food industry is almost crucial for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the industry.

UPM's Master of Food Technology (MoFT) is a postgraduate degree programme that has all the necessary components to offer those passionate about the food industry a change for a rewarding career. Its main aim is to provide students with a profound understanding of the food industry.

MoFT features a comprehensive curriculum involving all the key areas of food processing technology in order to enable students to gain professional knowledge and skills for the workplace. Upon graduation, graduates will be able to apply the acquired knowledge in the real world and display an edge over others, thus positioning themselves as being competitive for industry and public sector employment.

CURRICULUM

The programme is structured in three semester (one year) and is taught in English. The programme aims to produce graduates equipped with expert knowledge in the area of food technology for the sustainable development of food industry. MoFT consists of core and elective courses and a project. Student must complete at least a total of 41 credits for graduation.

MASTER�OF FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY ASSURANCE (MoFS)

Food safety is an important multidisciplinary field in food science and technology. With the increasing local and worldwide incidence of foodborne illness which leads to many losses, it is essential to acquire food safety knowledge through advance training which covers various aspects from micro and macro components of food to understanding the food policy development, risk analysis, food regulation and food safety management system. Food safety has become crucial due to globalization of food supply chain and international trade.

Master of Food Safety and Quality Assurance (MoFS) is a postgraduate program by coursework aims to provide profound knowledge through integrated approach. This will benefit both government and food industry and related stakeholders. Understanding the sound science behind food safety will ensure food produced is free from harmful biological, chemical and physical contaminants thus contribute to customer satisfaction and confidence. The uniqueness of MoFS program is that it allows strong networking and collaboration among experts, government and industries. In addition, it provides further insight on food safety and quality aspects towards empowering the economy. The graduates will acquire better understanding in a diverse range of areas in food safety for a more rewarding career development. The exposure and knowledge gained can be applied in securing quality research and production of safe food for health and wellness.


Aims of programme

i.   This programme emphasises on extensive training in the area of food safety and quality assurance to produce human capital that will mobilise the local food industry.

ii.  This programme will produce human capital that are able to fulfill the job market expectation, become national aspiration, be versatile and be competitive.


Objectives of programme 

i.   To produce graduates who are critical and analytical in thinking with strong knowledge grasp in food science area with emphasis on food safety and quality assurance for supporting continued advancement of food industry in Malaysia.

ii.  Curriculum in this programme emphasizes on both theoretical and practical aspects where critical thinking, lifelong learning, ethics and professional morals, communication skills, and leadership and teamwork skills are parts of the important learning system. Students are required to prepare a dissertation and present scientific finding in the form of seminar and scholarly writing.

iii. Course contents are formed in parallel with latest development in food science involving knowledge application such as food innovations, food safety toxicology, current technology in food diagnostic as well as practiced food safety standard and regulation. This program will produce professional food science graduates who can fulfill the job market expectation and be competitive. This will catalyse the development of food industry and related government agencies through the employment of MoFS graduates.

General Admission Requirement

  • Applicants with good scholastic achievement in a bachelor’s degree in disciplines related to the programme, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 or its equivalent, or
  • CGPA 2.75 – 2.99 with a minimum of one (1) year of working experience in the field of study, or
  • CGPA 2.50 – 2.74 with a minimum of three (3) years   of working experience in the field of study.
  • A local applicant must have obtained at least a credit in English at the “Sijil  Pelajaran  Malaysia”  level  or  equivalent,  or  have  passed English courses at the Diploma or Bachelor level.
  • An international applicant must have obtained a minimum score of 550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test or Band 6.0  for  IELTS  (Academic  Version),  or  79–80  for  TOEFL  Internet-based  Test  or  213  for  the  TOEFL  Computer-based  Test,  or  Level 109 for CIEP, or their equivalent. TOEFL ITP is not acceptable. The validity period should not be more than five years.
