Department of Food Science was established under the Faculty of Food Science and Technology in March 1982. It offers core and elective courses for Bachelor of Food Science and Technology and Bachelor of Food Studies programs. In addition, the department also provides service courses to students from other programs such as Bachelor of Science (Bio-industry) and Bachelor of Science Engineering. Currently, the department is responsible for coordinating the Bachelor of Food Science and Technology program. The organizational structure of the Food Science Department consists of the academicians (Professor, Associate Professor, and Lecturer), management and professional staff, and support staff. Apart from teaching, the academicians are also involved in research, development and consultancy. The expertise and research fields of the academician in Food Science Department include cocoa technology, food flavor, food safety, post harvest technology of fruits and vegetables, modification of carbohydrate chemistry, food enzymology, food biotechnology, functional food, oil and fat chemistry, food safety and food microbiology. These academicians also contribute to the food industry in Malaysia and other institutions through consultancy and development activities that are related to their fields and expertise. The Food Science Department is responsible for the Bachelor of Food Science and Technology programs. Since 1976, the department has produced nearly 1200 graduates trained in the field of Food Science and Technology. This program consists of food chemistry, food microbiology, food and nutrition, food processing and preservation, and food engineering. The department also offers Master and PhD programs in your fields, namely food chemistry and biochemistry, post harvest technology, food safety and microbiology and functional food. |
