Empowering Food Biotechnology: Associate Professor Dr. Hanan Hasan Shares Expertise in Lecture and Workshop on CRISPR/Cas9 Technology Applications

Pekanbaru, Indonesia, 18 July 2025 – The Indonesian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ISBMB), in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Riau, organized a lecture and workshop titled "Designing CRISPR: Applications in Food Biotechnology and Metabolic Engineering." The workshop featured Associate Professor Dr. Hanan Hasan, an expert in food biotechnology, as the keynote speaker, sharing his research experience in food biotechnology, metabolic engineering, and the application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology to improve food quality, safety, and resilience. A total of 70 participants, consisting of undergraduate students, postgraduates, researchers, and lecturers from Universitas Riau, attended the event to gain the latest insights into genetic editing technologies. In his presentation, Associate Professor Dr. Hanan Hasan emphasized the importance of genomic research in addressing global food security challenges.

“CRISPR/Cas9 is not just a research tool, but a revolution in biotechnology that can solve food scarcity issues and enhance nutrition,” he explained.

In addition to the knowledge-sharing sessions, the workshop also provided hands-on training where participants were guided to design single guide RNA (sgRNA) using specialized software to ensure high efficiency in CRISPR/Cas9 applications.

This program not only succeeded in enhancing participants’ understanding of cutting-edge molecular technology but also strengthened academic and research ties between Universitas Riau and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). It is hoped that such collaborations will continue in the future to reinforce regional research networks in biotechnology and genetic engineering.
