SERDANG, March 18 – Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI), Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in collaboration with the Department of Food Science (JSM), Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FSTM), UPM has organized a webinar of "Keracunan Makanan; Di Mana Silapnya?” on March 18, 2022. This webinar is the first series of Food Safety Webinar organized in 2022. The nearly 2.5 hour webinar was led by Dr. Mohd Hafiz Rosli, Research Officer at FOSFI, as moderator, and presented by Dr. Nik Iskandar Putra Samsudin, Research Associate at FOSFI and also Senior Lecturer at JSM. His area of expertise is Food Microbiological Safety which is closely related to food poisoning cases. The organizing committee of this webinar consists of FOSFI staff.
The speaker is diligently and earnestly conveying the information.
More than 500 participants from inside and outside UPM have participated in this webinar. Among the contents of the webinar were discussions on the sources of food contamination, foodborne diseases, safe food handling, the latest cases of food poisoning and public misconceptions about it. As this webinar is conducted in general, the participation is very encouraging following the selection of topics that are so relevant to all walks of life. Participation of government agencies includes the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of National Unity and Integration, Ministry of Defence, Department of Social Welfare, Department of State Health, Department of National Registration, Department of State Education, Jabatan Penyiaran, Department of Agriculture, District Health Clinic, Public Health Laboratory, Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, and District Health Office. Participation of IPTA/IPTS includes the University of Malaysia Sarawak, University of Technology Malaysia, Pasir Salak Community College, Perak, Arau Community College, Perlis, Johor Matriculation College, Klang Vocational College, Selangor, Kuala Klawang Vocational College, Negeri Sembilan, Lahad Datu Vocational College, Sabah, Sandakan Vocational College, Sabah, and Tun Syed Nasir Syed Ismail Polytechnic, Johor.

Overall, this webinar is seen to have achieved the objective of its organization which is to increase the awareness of participants on aspects of food safety and the importance of avoiding contamination and food poisoning. Based on the received feedback, most of the participants were very satisfied with this webinar and requesting for an extension of duration as well as the second part of webinar. It is also hoped that such programs can be continued in the future as an effort to create a society that is aware of food security and apply the knowledge gained in their daily lives. All participants who attended were given e-certificates and participants from UPM also obtained Continuous Professional Development (CPD) credit points.
