MPOC-UPM COLLABORATION; LATEST INITIATIVE IN PROMOTING MALAYSIAN PALM OIL

Several lecturers from the Faculty (Dr. Mohd Sabri Pak Dek, Dr. Masni Mat Yusoff, Dr. Nurul Shazini Ramli, and Dr. Ahmad Haniff Jaafar) have been collaborating with Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) since 2017, to support the national palm oil agendas through teaching and learning activities. The collaboration was primarily initiated to increase knowledge and awareness of the palm oil industry among the Faculty’s students. Various programs co-organised with MPOC, such as the MPOC Outreach Program, UPM’s Love My Palm Oil Student Ambassador Program, and Learning Kit Development have been successful.

In December 2018, the Faculty successfully organised the “Nutri-Palm and Palm-Process Educational Program” which involved three other faculties in UPM (Agriculture, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Forestry). With the participation of more than 150 students and the positive feedback received following the completion of the program, the organisers were positively inspired to take their collaboration to a higher level.

On 24 th March 2019, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, launched the “Love MY Palm Oil” campaign to bolster the spirit of love and pride among Malaysians towards Malaysian palm oil products. Following this, the Faculty and MPOC moved forward together more aggressively, and organised several research- and academic-related programs to further their palm oil promoting mission such as field trip for students undertaking the FST 4834 subject (Fats and Oils Technology) at the Palm Oil Experience Centre (POEC), Sime Darby Plantation Academy (SDPA), Carey Island, Selangor (April 2019), and the launch of UPM Tenera Association (TENERA; April 2019) as part of the Palm Oil Student Ambassador Program.
