Outreach program with a theme of Global Warming and Microbial Food Safety: Preparing for Future Challenges program at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia

Yogyakarta, 22 August 2025 – The 7th International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) was held at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on 21-22 August 2025. The outreach program was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Robert A. Samson, who is also a secretary-general of IUMS Executive Board 2022-2026. A total of 20 invited speakers from Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and France have shared their research findings on microbial food safety research that mainly covered ongoing food safety issues, including unsafe foods and undernourished nations, migration of pathogens to northen region, as well as resilience of mycotoxin-producing fungi under various climate threats.  Microbiological risk assessment was also discussed as a tool to better illustrate the relationship between climatic factors and the severity of diseases throughout the food supply chain. Nevertheless, control strategies using lactic acid bacteria and the development of next-generation proteins were presented to mitigate the unprecedented climate threats on agricultural commodities and food security.
