Two Experts from UPM Faculty of Food Science and Technology Strengthen Insights on Emerging Technologies in Food Safety Auditing at KKM Auditor Conference 2025

SHAH ALAM, 29 July 2025 – Two experts from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), were invited as guest speakers at the 2025 Food Safety Assurance Programme Certification Scheme Auditor Conference organized by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM). The conference, held at Concorde Hotel, Shah Alam, brought together more than 200 auditors from across the country.

Dr. Sarina Abdul Halim Lim, an expert in quality management and technology adoption, presented a talk entitled “Emerging Technology in Food Safety Auditing.” She highlighted the transformative role of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT) in empowering food audit processes toward systems that are more automated, transparent, and based on real-time data.

Her session featured interactive case studies that sparked active discussions among participants, particularly on the need for human resource training, digital infrastructure readiness, and alignment of existing policies and standards to support comprehensive technology adoption. Notably, Dr. Sarina concluded her session with a preview of her ongoing research findings on the ‘intention to adopt’ digital technology among industry practitioners, based on a socio-technical perspective that examines the interplay of organizational, technological, and human factors influencing the acceptance of digital auditing.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Noranizan Binti Mohd Adzahan, the seventh presenter, delivered a talk titled “High Pressure Processing (HPP) in Juice and Drinks.” She explained that HPP is a non-thermal processing technology capable of preserving the nutritional value, taste, and natural color of beverage products while extending shelf life without the use of preservatives.

Dr. Noranizan also discussed global trends in HPP adoption, supported by real-world applications from food products that prioritize quality and safety—an aspect that drew keen interest from the audience. She emphasized how rising consumer demand for natural and safe products is driving the rapid growth of HPP as one of the leading technologies in global food processing innovation.

Together, both presentations enriched the auditors' understanding and perspectives on current and future approaches to food safety. This aligns with KKM’s continued commitment to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, and public trust in Malaysia’s food audit systems, ultimately ensuring safe food for the nation.
