11th MIFT National Food Science and Technology Competition

On 6th and 7th April 2019, 23 students from Faculty of Food Science and Technology have represented UPM in the 11th MIFT National Food Science and Technology Competition organised by Malaysian Institute of Food Technology (MIFT). The competition was held at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Kampar Campus, Perak. Many local and private universities also participated in this competition.

The competition is held every two years, which aims to provide a platform for the student to understand and evaluate their capabilities, abilities and knowledge from soft skills to hard science. The food-related ideas exchanged, and researches conducted by other universities as well as the development of food products will certainly broaden their vision and understanding of the food science and technology opportunities in the industry.

All participants competed in several categories such as oral presentation, poster presentation, oratory competition, food bowl quiz, and food innovation development. Of all the categories, our food bowl quiz team managed to get through the semi-finals. Ultimately, our second-year student, Ms. Su Pick Kiong impressively won a silver medal in the individual food bowl quiz category.

In conclusion, the competition provided indirect feedback on the growth of our students and also showcased their ability at a national level. Even though UPM did not bring back significant amount of medals, our students gained motivation, experience, networking opportunities and also the drive to seek deeper knowledge and excel as a food science and technology graduates, which is what the competition is all about.
