Foodzania (Orientation for New Students)

On 22nd September 2019, the Faculty, with the assistance of the Faculty’s Students’ Union (FOSTECH), has organised Foodzania (orientation for new students) at the Faculty’s main hall (DKTM 1) and around the Faculty’s vicinity. This program was primarily aimed to orientate the new students with the Faculty, its organisation, and its facilities. This program was coordinated by Ain Fatini Majdi (BSPMK) with the help of other FOSTECH committee members.

 

Foodzania 2019 started off with students’ registration, followed by opening remark by FOSTECH’s Advisor, Dr. Nik Iskandar Putra Samsudin. A total of 127 new students from Bachelor of Food Science and Technology (BSTM), Bachelor of Science - Food Studies (BSPMK) and Bachelor of Science - Food Service Management (BSPPM) participated in Foodzania 2019. During the opening remark, several new students were randomly picked to share with the audience how they felt after several weeks being in UPM. This was done to polish their public and impromptu speaking skills. It was very encouraging to know that almost majority of the students selected the Faculty as their top 3 choices to pursue tertiary level education. Later, Nur Fakhira Hidayati Md Daud (BSPMK), the Vice President of FOSTECH, gave a briefing on the Faculty, and tentative of Foodzania 2019.

 

Several challenging and exciting activities were prepared for Foodzania 2019 during which all the students were divided into 10 groups and must complete the task within the stipulated time. The group allocation was done in such a way that students from all three undergraduate programs were mixed to encourage interaction between different programs. A guided tour around the Faculty’s buildings and facilities was also conducted especially the lecture halls / rooms and laboratories. After lunch, the new students gathered again at the main hall, and a session with senior students took place during which they shared their experience being at the Faculty. Foodzania 2019 concluded at 3 pm with the new students inspired and energised to start their semester at the Faculty.
