EDUPALM 2025

PULAU CAREY, 25-27 JULY 2025 – EDUPALM is a national program organized and sponsored by Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC). In this year, 36 students and 4 lecturers from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology were invited to join the program, together with students and lecturers from the UCSI University and Persatuan Regenerasi dan Kelestarian Alam (REGENERASI). This program aims to educate and increase the awareness of students from local and private universities about the importance of ensuring environmental sustainability of the palm sector in Malaysia specifically, and of the global palm sector generally.

 

On day 1, the program started with introduction, briefing on the program, and grouping of the participants by the organizer. This was followed by lectures delivered by representatives from SD Guthrie Berhad and MPOC about the benefits and contribution of palm industry to the country and consumers in terms of economy, environmental sustainability, and food product safety. The lectures also encompassed the importance of Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certifications, the benefits of palm oil, and the various applications of palm-based oils and fats in many sectors, specifically food sectors.

 

On day 2, participants visited Palm Oil Experience Centre (POEC) for Know Your Palm Oil (KYPO) field trip led by representative from SD Guthrie Berhad. Here, participants are exposed towards recent practice and technology used in harvesting palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) and in supervision of palm plantation. Following was a visit to Plantation Museum Carey Island where participants can learn about the history of palm plantation and FFB harvesting techniques in Malaysia. In the afternoon, Palm Oil Adventure Race was carried out involving 10 groups of participants who competed for the championship by solving tasks that tested their knowledge about the Malaysian palm industry.

 

Throughout the program, these 10 groups of participants also competed in creating short videos aiming to increase the awareness and knowledge of consumers about palm benefits and industry. All these videos were published publically in social media, and were displayed during the closing ceremony on day 3. This session was followed by a short presentation by representatives of each group which also included their experience along the EDUPALM program. EDUPALM ended with a prize-giving ceremony and a closing speech by an MPOC representative.
