Tanjung Karang, 16 December 2025 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), through a student and university management initiative, went to the ground to successfully conduct a knowledge transfer workshop on pineapple jam making in Kampung Sawah Sempadan recently. The three-day program, which took place from 12 to 14 December 2025, was mobilised by the Faculty of Food Science and Technology Students' Representative Council (FOSTECH) in collaboration with the Co-Curricular and Student Development Centre (PKPP).
This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program was part of the Putra @ Sawah Sempadan Carnival content under the MADANI Adopted Village Project. It was implemented to strengthen food security and open up new economic generation opportunities for the local residents by utilizing the abundant pineapple agricultural produce in the area.
A total of 18 students from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FSTM) were directly involved as instructors in this workshop. Through the UPM Putra Squad approach, the students applied the knowledge learned in lectures by teaching the community how to produce a value-added downstream product, which is pineapple jam, by emphasizing correct and safe processing techniques.
The technical knowledge related to food safety and jam making methods shared by the UPM students greatly helped the residents to diversify their sources of income through products based on local resources.
Overall, the program proves UPM's role is not just an ivory tower, but also as a catalyst for community development. Through the combination of academic expertise and community needs, this effort is seen as successful in achieving its objective of improving the socioeconomic status of the residents of Kampung Sawah Sempadan, in line with the nation's development aspirations.
