On 27^th August 2019, the Faculty, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Food Safety and Food Integrity (FOSFI), Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), UPM, has organised a public lecture entitled “Antimicrobial Resistance and its Effect on Food Safety and Security” which took place at the Faculty’s main hall (DKTM 1), Food 1 Building, Faculty of Food Science and Technology.

Prof. Dr. Steve Flint from Massey University, New Zealand was the invited speaker. Prof. Flint is an expert in microbiological food safety, and his main research interests are food microbiology, dairy technology, rapid microbiological methods, biofilms, molecular techniques for food analysis, bacterial spores, thermophilic bacteria, foodborne pathogens (especially Listeria), food processing, solving microbiological problems in food manufacturing plants, cleaning systems for food manufacture as well as traceback analysis for pathogenic contamination. Thus far, Prof. Flint has published 140 peer-reviewed research articles, with a Scopus h-index of 27, and Google Scholar h-index of 34. During the public lecture, Prof. Flint has shared his vast experience and knowledge in antimicrobial resistance and its effect on food safety and food security. He also emphasised that preventing food contamination is even more important to avoid illnesses that are now harder to treat, and can be lethal. The public lecture also highlighted the development of a food safety culture and advanced tools for food traceability which will help in ensuring the safety and security of food into the future.
